BTD, Public Meets to Discuss Sullivan Square, Rutherford Ave

Knights of Columbus Hall in Charlestown played host to the Boston Transportation Department, several local activist groups, and a handful of other residents to discuss proposed changes to Sullivan Square and Rutherford Avenue on July 24th.

Between the city and federal government, nearly $14 million have been set aside for the project, one that is aimed towards improving traffic flow through Sullivan Square and along Rutherford Avenue. Some officials have stated that give both of them back to the neighborhood. There is currently about a one year timetable for the project:

  • Phase 1: Fall 2008. Identify conceptual alternatives and establishing design principles.
  • Phase 2: Spring 2009. Selection of conceptual design.
  • Phase 3: Summer/Fall 2009. Review of preliminary design.

The preliminary study will include studying both Sullivan Square and Rutherford Avenue in their current state, as well as taking into account various development projects that will soon begin to take shape in both areas. One key part of this project is trying to reintegrate Bunker Hill Community College back into the community. Many residents have considered the college to be isolated from the rest of the area.

Of particular concern to neighborhood activists is how Rutherford Avenue acts almost like a highway rather than a city street. While it is a priority to help turn the avenue back into a community oriented street, the BTD also acknowledges that it is an important connection, and wants to maintain in as such.

Meetings are planned every two months for the duration of the project.
