Newsworthy Notes: August 18, 2008

Making the Case for a Training Base in Hartford: An interesting letter appeared today, making a case for the area surrounding Rentschler Field (the home for the Connecticut Huskies football team) to be the home for the next Army Corps of Engineers regional training facility. The letter sites examples such as the influx of new jobs (70 full time) and visitors (approximately 400), the access to major highways (I-84, I-91, and I-384), and the availability of land (600 acres) as reasons as to why the area would be an ideal location for a new training center. Brown Street Park Ribbon Cutting Set: In a press release from the Mayor of Providence, it was announced that August 20th would be the date for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the transformed Brown Street Park. Recently, the park was revamped with new ‘green’ features, such as new plants and flowers, structures made of recycled materials, and new bike racks. Source: Official Press Release

MetroPCS Coming to Boston, Cambridge: In the day of giants AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile, there are very few times when a new mobile service breaks onto the scene. In early 2009, that is just what will happen in Boston. MetroPCS, a company that already serves the American markets of Dallas, Los Angeles, and Detroit, will debut their service, and will serve the communities of Cambridge, Boston, Medford, Somerville, and several other smaller communities. NextG, a California-based company that installs networks for mobile service providers, will install the infrastructure for MetroPCS. Source: Cambridge Tab
