Salvation Army still Looking to Build in Dorchester

The sign went up in 2006. Construction was supposed to start in the fall of 2007. Now, the sign is still there, as well as a bunch of overgrown weeds and grass.

The site sitting dormant in Dorchester is the future home of the 90,000 square foot Kroc Community Corps Center. Back in 2006, it was announced that the Salvation Army had secured $85 million for the facility from Joan Kroc. The other $20 million would come from money raised from local residents.

Unfortunately, with the rising cost of construction and inflation, the overall cost of the project has gone up, causing delays with the project. Other issues holding construction back come from an increased demand regarding the use of current Salvation Army facilities. With the economy in a downtrend and gad and food prices on the way up, more and more people have come to the Salvation Army looking for the bare essentials. This has prevented officials in charge of the project from dedicating sufficient time to fundraising for the project.

It is estimated that an additional $30 million will need to be raised to support the project.

The goal of the new center would be to be a meeting place for the numerous and diverse communities throughout the area. Those in charge of the project still maintain that that is the goal.

They hope to break ground on the project next fall, but only if they can raise that $30 million.
